Advent Calendar 1.2

According to Wikipedia an advent calendar is a special calendar used to count down the days until Christmas.  Usually they are cards or small houses with a window to open for each day.  Jeremy likes the kind that have a chocolate to eat for each day.  My mom has one that is a wall hanging of a house, and there is a little plush bear that hooks onto various places on the wall hanging.  The idea is that the bear is looking for Christmas and goes to a different room each day until he finds it on Christmas Eve.  It’s real cute, and as children we loved it when it was our turn to move the bear.

I thought it would be fun to have an advent calendar here on my blog.  I’m already celebrating advent each Sunday, so why not extend it and do it every day in December?  I thought it would be fun to do a different Christmas hymn every day.  So, loosely keeping with the theme of each Advent Sunday, here’s the second hymn (the first one was yesterday).  Thus, the 1.2 in the title means first week, second day.  This hymn expresses the longing of the people of God for the coming of their Savior and reflects our longing for His return.  You can hear it here.

Haggai 2:7

…and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory, says the LORD of hosts.

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
