Advent Calendar 1.7
Saturday, December 6th, 2008Week One: Hope: Day Seven
This is one of the most beautiful of the Christmas carols. You can hear it here, but it doesn’t quite do it justice. It is a very solemn and reverential, but yet joyful hymn. I really like it.
I especially like the lines: “Long lay the world in sin and error pining,/Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth./A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices.” I’ve struggled most of my life with low self-esteem, so it’s good for me to be reminded of the worth God puts on my soul. And the “long lay the world in sin and error pining”–this world’s been messed up a long time. We’ve been trying to fix it for thousands of years, but it hasn’t worked. We need a Savior; we need someone to fix us, what we can’t fix ourselves. Jesus is our “thrill of hope” that causes the weary soul to rejoice.
Ephesians 1:6-7 and 2:14a, 15a
To the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. For He Himself is our peace…having abolished in His flesh the enmity.
O Holy Night
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our Friend!
He knows our need—to our weakness is no stranger.
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King; before Him lowly bend!Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy Name!
Christ is the Lord! O praise His name forever!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
